Munich-based startup Isar Aerospace has successfully reached low-Earth orbit with its two-stage Spectrum rocket, marking the first time a privately developed commercial launch vehicle has achieved orbital insertion from continental Europe.
Lifting off from Andøya Spaceport in northern Norway, the 28-meter Spectrum launcher deployed five small satellites and an in-flight technology payload during its "Onward and Upward" mission. Following a prior test flight failure 18 months ago, the successful orbital flight represents a major milestone for European space autonomy, establishing a commercial small-satellite launch capability directly on the continent to compete with dominant global operators like SpaceX.
